Business AI audit: where to start?
Why run an AI audit before any project?
Launching an artificial intelligence project without a prior audit is like building a house without a blueprint. You risk wasting time, money and energy on initiatives that do not match your real needs.
An AI audit gives you an objective assessment of your digital maturity, identifies the processes with the highest automation potential, and builds a realistic, prioritized roadmap.
Step 1: Map your business processes
The first step is to list all of your company's business processes, department by department. For each one, document the time spent, the resources involved, the volume of data processed and the friction points identified.
Focus on repetitive, high-volume processes that are prone to human error. These are usually the best candidates for AI-powered automation.
Step 2: Assess the quality of your data
AI runs on data. Without reliable, structured data in sufficient quantity, even the best algorithm will produce nothing useful. The data audit is therefore an essential pillar.
Assess the quality of your data against 4 criteria: completeness, accuracy, consistency and accessibility. Identify data silos and untapped sources (CRM, ERP, emails, social media).
Step 3: Identify high-ROI use cases
Cross-reference your process map with the state of your data to surface the most promising use cases. Evaluate each opportunity along three axes: potential business impact, technical feasibility and time to implementation.
Quick wins — high-impact, low-complexity projects — should be prioritized. They quickly demonstrate the value of AI and build positive momentum within the company.
Step 4: Define the AI roadmap
Based on the use cases identified, build a 6-to-18-month roadmap. Every project should have SMART objectives, an estimated budget, tracking KPIs and a designated business sponsor.
Plan intermediate milestones with POCs (Proof of Concept) to validate assumptions before investing heavily. This iterative approach minimizes risk and maximizes learning.
Step 5: Prepare for change
AI adoption is as much a human challenge as a technical one. Your audit should include a change management component: identifying potential resistance, a team training plan and internal communication.
The companies that succeed in their AI transformation are the ones that involve employees from the very start of the process and highlight the gains achieved at every stage.
